City Nears Action on Right-of-Way Care
A simplified way to prod residents to care for shrubs and trees on city right-of-way land is scheduled for final action by the City Council tonight.
The council last month gave initial approval to changes in the municipal code allowing city government to handle right-of-way problems without having to file public nuisance complaints, City Clerk Kaysene Miller said.
“Property owners are responsible for plantings on abutting right-of-ways,” Miller said. “Typical problems are when a property owner doesn’t trim trees or shrubs on the right-of-ways and they spread into the street.”
Miller said that under the proposed changes, the city would notify property owners by letter of the problem. If no action is taken, the city would follow up with another letter directing the property owner to take care of the problem, she said.
If that fails, the city then could then hire someone to do the work and bill the property owner, Miller said.
The City Council also is scheduled to hear a status report on the Orange County Fire Authority’s proposal to offer its own ambulance service.
