The Colorado Rockies gave Milwaukee much-needed infield help Wednesday, trading Jeff Huson to the Brewers for a player to be named.

Huson, who broke into the majors with Montreal in 1998, nearly quit after being cut by the Rockies in spring training. He agreed to an assignment at triple-A Colorado Springs after the Rockies promised they would try to trade him.

The Brewers are in need of help after second baseman Fernando Vina broke his left leg and shortstop Jose Valentin went on the disabled list because of a broken left finger.

Huson, a career .236 hitter, has spent all or part of eight seasons in the majors, playing for Montreal, Texas and Baltimore. His best season was with the Rangers in 1992 when he hit .261 with 18 stolen bases.

Tim Davis, scheduled to start for the Seattle Mariners against Kansas City on Wednesday night, left the game because of a strained left forearm before throwing a single pitch. Though listed in the starting lineup and credited with an appearance, Davis was unable to continue after his warmup tosses. . . . The Boston Red Sox put knuckleball pitcher Tim Wakefield on the 15-day disabled list because of swelling in his right elbow. Wakefield, 1-1 with a 4.24 earned-run average, will be replaced in the rotation by Chris Hammond for today’s game against Baltimore. Boston recalled left-hander Vaughn Eshelman from triple-A Pawtucket to replace Wakefield on the roster. . . . New York Yankee General Manager Bob Watson was hospitalized for problems relating to high blood pressure. Watson was admitted to Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center on Tuesday, and tests proved negative.
