Just to Let Him Know Effort Was Appreciated

Judging from the virulent response from readers and his colleagues in sports, Bob Nightengale must know firsthand how it feels to be black in America.

Because he wrote an article pointing out that baseball--including the Dodgers--may have a bias against African Americans, The Times turned on him, first with that obnoxious article by Bill Plaschke [“50 Years, Still Fears,” April 15] and then with nothing but negative letters from readers blasting him.

It’s hard for me to believe that no one wrote in support of Nightengale and the players who had the guts to point out baseball’s shortcomings. Just in case the lopsided Viewpoint letters wasn’t a Times bias, let me go on record and say, “Thanks, Nightengale, and keep fighting to print the truth.” Some of us appreciate it.
