A 29-year-old Oxnard woman who was stabbed numerous times during a domestic argument remained hospitalized Saturday in critical condition, authorities said.

Her estranged boyfriend was being held in Ventura County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.

Oxnard police responded to a call of a stabbing victim in the alley in the 800 block of F Street about 10 p.m. Friday. Officer Michael Young said he found Lozetta Hughes on the ground, bleeding from numerous stab wounds to her upper torso.

Hughes had been driving around with her estranged boyfriend, identified by police as 36-year-old Timothy Akers of Oxnard, when they began arguing, according to Young.

Police said Akers pulled out a knife and stabbed Hughes repeatedly. Hughes jumped out of the car and went to a nearby residence for help.

Akers, who left the area, was arrested later that evening, police said.

Hughes was taken to Ventura County Medical Center. Akers was being held Saturday on $270,000 bail.

The investigation is continuing.
