Schultz Hurls No-Hitter, 7-0
Mike Schultz became the first Cleveland High pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Bret Saberhagen in 1982 with a 7-0 North Valley League victory over San Fernando on Tuesday at Cleveland.
Saberhagen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, pitched a no-hitter at Dodger Stadium in a 13-0 victory over Palisades for the City Section 4-A Division championship.
Schultz (5-3), a 6-foot-6 senior right-hander, struck out seven and walked three for the Cavaliers (13-10, 9-5 in conference play).
In the fifth inning, right fielder Justin Savitt made a running catch on the shallow pop up by San Fernando’s Omar Gurrola.
Savitt had two hits, a run-scoring single in the first inning and a run-scoring triple in the fifth. Jared Mills, who had two hits, followed Savitt’s triple with another triple.
Chris Vasquez had two hits, including a run-scoring double in the second.
