Livingstone’s Single Beats Astros in 10th

Pinch-hitter Scott Livingstone singled in the winning run with two out in the 10th inning Saturday night in the San Diego Padres’ 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros.

Tony Gwynn, who earlier hit his 100th career home run and extended his hitting streak to 17 games, drew a one-out walk from Ramon Garcia (2-4) in the 10th.

Gwynn took second on Steve Finley’s groundout and Ken Caminiti was intentionally walked. Wally Joyner singled to medium left, with Gwynn holding up at third.

Livingstone batted for reliever Trevor Hoffman (3-3) and grounded an 0-2 pitch into left. The victory made the Padres 5-0 in home extra-inning games.

Hoffman relieved in the ninth and escaped a bases-loaded jam. He retired Luis Gonzalez, who had earlier homered, on a pop-up and struck out Ray Montgomery.

Joyner also homered for the Padres.

Padre left-hander Heath Murray failed to match his performance in his first major league start, when he defeated Greg Maddux and the Atlanta Braves, 5-4, on Monday.

Murray gave up three runs in the first inning, then gave up Gonzalez’s homer leading off the fifth that gave Houston a 4-3 lead.

The Padres tied it, 4-4, in the eighth when Rickey Henderson hit a leadoff double and scored on Finley’s single to right.

Gwynn pulled within one hit of tying San Diego native Ted Williams (2,654) for 56th on the career hit list.

Gwynn’s team-leading 10th homer cleared the inner fence just to the left of the out-of-town scoreboard that hangs from the right-field wall, pulling San Diego to 3-2 with one out in the third.

Gwynn joined Nate Colbert (163) and Dave Winfield (154) as the only players to hit 100 homers for the Padres. He has reached double figures in homers twice before, with 14 in 1986 and 12 in 1994, the year he hit a career-high .394 before the players’ strike ended the season.

Gonzalez has hit safely in 27 of his last 31 games.
