Mariners Beat Rockies, 12-11

Brought together by interleague play, the two highest-scoring teams in the majors did not disappoint Thursday night as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Colorado Rockies, 12-11, before 37,948 at the Kingdome.

Trailing, 6-0, in the second inning and, 10-6, in the sixth, the Mariners finally passed Colorado in the seventh on Jay Buhner’s three-run double.

After a walk to Russ Davis and a single by Brent Gates, Ken Griffey Jr. hit a run-scoring double off Mike Munoz (1-1) to cut the Rockies’ lead to 10-9. Steve Reed relieved and walked Edgar Martinez to load the bases, then gave up a double to Buhner into the left field corner that gave the Mariners the lead at 12-10.

Griffey drove in three runs and Paul Sorrento had three of the Seattle’s 12 hits.

Bob Wells (2-0) got the win and Bobby Ayala earned his fourth save.

Andres Galarraga had four hits, including two doubles, and Larry Walker had two hits for the Rockies.

Seattle shortstop Alex Rodriguez did not play because of a bruised chest suffered in the Mariners’ victory over Toronto on Wednesday.

Rodriguez took a knee to the chest from Toronto’s Roger Clemens while sliding at home plate in the first inning. Rodriguez scored from third base after a wild pitch by Clemens.

Rodriguez, last season’s American League batting champion, will be out five to seven days but won’t have to go on the disabled list, according to Dr. Larry Pedegana, a Mariners’ team physician.

“I’m quite relieved,” the 21-year-old shortstop said before Thursday’s game. “This is very good news.”
