Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth shot a two-under-par 70 and edged B.J. Schlagenhauf of UCLA, 1 up, Wednesday in the first-round of match play in the 86th California Amateur Golf Championships at Pebble Beach.

Hogarth, 30, who on Tuesday set a medalist record with a score of 138, rallied from two holes down to defeat Schlagenhauf. Hogarth won the U.S. Public Links championship in 1996.

Also advancing were Jason Gore of Valencia and J.T. Kohut of Simi Valley. Gore, who helped Pepperdine win the NCAA championship this season, defeated Christopher Johnson of Cordova, 3 and 2. Kohut defeated Jim Camaione of Upland, 3 and 2.
