Hawaii Revokes Tim Carey’s Scholarship, but He Will Play Anyway

Tim Carey will play football at Hawaii this fall without a scholarship, a penalty handed down by university officials, his father, Tim Carey Sr., said Friday.

Carey, a quarterback from Los Alamitos High, was among a group arrested in a gambling raid in Honolulu in May. Carey pleaded no contest to the charges and paid a $200 fine.

School officials decided to revoke Carey’s scholarship, meaning he will have to pay the approximate $8,000 to attend school this year.

“We’re just glad this is behind us,” Tim Carey Sr. said. “It’s been put to bed and Tim can stop worrying about it. Let’s get on with football.”

Carey, The Times Orange County prep football player of the year in 1992, has one year of eligibility left. He attended Stanford for three years, playing two and spending one season as a redshirt. He played in only one game for the Cardinal, completing three of four passes for 12 yards against Oregon State in 1995.

Carey was unable to become the starter in two tries. He transferred to Hawaii last fall and is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback this season.
