Lipman’s Hit Sends Royal to a Sweep

Brian Lipman singled home Mike Byer with two out in the eighth inning to give Royal an 11-10 victory over Moorpark in the second game of an American Legion baseball District 16 doubleheader at Moorpark College on Saturday.

Royal (11-1), which has won 10 consecutive games, took the opener, 4-2.

Byer, who had two hits and three runs batted in, singled home Brett Wayne earlier in the eighth to tie the score, 10-10.

Ryan Yoshiwara, who had three hits and scored two runs, gave Moorpark (6-9-1) a 10-9 lead in the top of the eighth with an RBI single.

In the first game, Matt Betincourt tripled home two runs in the third to give Royal a 2-0 lead and scored on a passed ball.

Betincourt walked in the seventh and stole second before coming home on Derrick O’Keefe’s double.

DISTRICT 20

Studio City North 15, Quartz Hill South 4--Clemente Ortega went four for four with two two-run doubles for Studio City North (11-6) at Sylmar High in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Carlos Gonzales (4-1) pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight, allowing two earned runs.

Mario Pacheco had three hits--including a three-run triple--and Jeff Worthen had three hits, including a two-run double.

Sun Valley 1, West Hills 0--Salvador Trujillo pitched a no-hitter, struck out five and walked one for Sun Valley at Poly High. Trujillo (2-2) faced the minimum of 21 batters for Sun Valley (8-9).

Johnny Manuel scored in the sixth when he singled, was sacrificed to second, went to third on a passed ball and came home when the throw to third was wide.

Sun Valley began the day with an 11-0 victory over Van Nuys South in a game that was called after 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule.

Raul Pelayo pitched a three-hitter, struck out three and walked one for Sun Valley, which had five hits.

Mark Castardo had two hits and scored three runs, and Oscar Sanchez had two hits and two RBIs.

Central Valley 8, Woodland Hills East 3--Vince Zuniga hit a grand slam--his first home run of the season--for Central Valley at Taft High.

Dan Palardy had two hits for Central Valley (11-5) and left-hander Oscar Fernandez pitched a five-hitter, struck out seven and walked four.

North Hollywood West 7, Van Nuys West 0--Ismael Rangsiyawong had three hits and drove in three runs for North Hollywood West (12-5). Rangsiyawong had a run-scoring double and two run-scoring singles.

Victor Aguirre (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking one, with only three balls hit out of the infield.

North Hollywood preserved the shutout with a game-ending, bases-loaded triple play that went from the center fielder to the catcher to first base.

Palmdale 16, Encino 5--Alex Suarez drove in two runs with three hits, scoring once, while Mark Hendricks and Mike Arrellano each drove in two runs with two hits and scored twice for Palmdale (9-5) in a game that was called after five innings.

Luke Worgan hit a home run for Encino (9-5).

North Hollywood East 6, Burbank South 2--Matt Thayer pitched a four-hitter and struck out nine for North Hollywood East at Burroughs High.

John Karavas and Sam Yagey each had two RBIs for North Hollywood East.

Antelope Valley North 12, Panorama City 7--Larry McCurtain had two hits, including a two-run home run in a nine-run sixth, as Antelope Valley North (12-4) rallied from a 6-3 deficit at Rosamond High.

Granada Hills West 9, Van Nuys East 8--Dan Frisbee had three hits, including a three-run triple in a six-run second inning for Granada Hills West (7-11) at Notre Dame High.
