John Elway should be ready to play in time for the Denver Broncos’ season opener against Kansas City Aug. 31, trainer Steve Antonopulos said Tuesday. Tests confirmed that the 37-year-old quarterback tore a tendon in his throwing arm during the Broncos’ 38-19 loss to Miami at Mexico City on Monday night and is expected to be out two to four weeks.

Miami linebacker Zach Thomas, who led the Dolphins in tackles with 131 last season as a rookie, suffered a broken fibula, the smaller bone in the lower leg, on a kickoff return Monday night. Defensive end Daniel Stubbs suffered a similar injury. Both are expected back by the season opener against Indianapolis. . . . Desmond Howard, who has missed most of training camp because of a slight hamstring strain, is expected to make his debut for the Oakland Raiders on Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers, his former team.
