Winds Rekindle Hopper Canyon Fire

Share

A week after fire crews contained the raging Hopper Canyon fire, steady winds reignited the blaze Tuesday in a small section along the northern end of the burn zone, officials said.

The three-acre fire, which erupted from a hot spot within the containment zone about 2 p.m., restarted in a section of land deep within Los Padres National Forest after 15- to 20-mph winds breathed new life into the dying embers.

Fire crews were dispatched to the area by helicopter and planned to spend the night making sure the winds don’t fan the flames out of control.

Tuesday’s winds also swept dust off fallow fields across the Ventura Freeway, creating numerous rush-hour slowdowns along sections of the roadway in Oxnard and Camarillo.

Fed by Tropical Storm Ignacio, churning several hundred miles off the Southern California coast, the winds are expected to dissipate overnight and today.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service forecast mostly sunny skies today with highs along the coast in the low 80s. Inland, temperatures in Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley are expected to climb into high 80s and low 90s, with lows in the mid-70s.
