Looking to add to your child’s library? There’s more out there than Dr. Seuss, Goosebumps and The Baby-Sitters Club. . . . Julie Albright, a children’s services specialist with the county library system, offers some suggestions for parents who like to know what their kids are reading (B2). Beyond those hints, she says, bear in mind that younger kids want pictures and comfortable themes, while older ones want suspense.

Road Work

Parents who use heavily traveled Mission Oaks Boulevard as a drop-off and pickup point for their kids at Adolfo Camarillo High School are advised to stop doing so because of ongoing construction work in the area (B1). . . . “It’s not wise to load and unload your kids on Mission Oaks when cars are whizzing by at 50 mph,” said Tom Fox, a city traffic engineer.

Making Waves

They may be a generation apart, but Oxnard’s Tami Kahn, 17, and Newbury Park’s Debbie Nordblad, 44, leave most rival water-ski racers in their wake (B1). . . . Zooming across a lake at more than 90 mph is not for the faint of heart though. “You hit a wave wrong or fall wrong and you can get hurt badly,” Nordblad says.

2-Wheeled Targets

It’s bad enough that cyclists have to brave wind, rain and bugs in their teeth. They also have to put up with motorists whose heedlessness, cluelessness and just plain rudeness may put their lives and their fragile machines in jeopardy. . . . Street Smart (B1) recommends caution on everyone’s part, because motorcyclists and bicyclists have the same rights--and can sue just as easily--as their four-wheeled counterparts.

Weather

Mostly clear except for patchy morning fog along the coast. Highs to mid-90s. B7
