Driver Rescued After Car Veers Off Road
A woman whose car hurtled off Pacific Coast Highway, landed on the beach and burst into flames Monday afternoon escaped without serious injury, according to rescue workers at the scene.
The woman, whom the California Highway Patrol did not identify, fell asleep at the wheel about 2:40 p.m., several miles north of Yerba Buena Road, officials said. Several bystanders who saw the accident pulled her from the vehicle before it caught fire.
She was taken by helicopter to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for cuts and bruises and released, rescue workers said.
