SCC Faces Test in Tournament

The Southern California College men’s basketball team continues its road show, traveling to play at the Cal State Monterey Bay tournament this weekend. SCC, which plays 10 of its first 11 games on the road, plays at San Diego State and Pomona Pitzer next week.

The Vanguards (3-4) lost their only home game so far this season, falling to Christian Heritage in overtime, 98-88, Nov. 18.

Freshman Dennis Keane, from Santa Margarita High, is averaging a team-high 18 points and former Mater Dei standout Terence Wilborn is averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds. SCC’s next home game is Dec. 29 against Midland Lutheran of Nebraska.

Chapman will hit the road after the holidays, playing eight consecutive road games in January.

Chapman will play three of its next four games at home, including Saturday’s game against Claremont. But after a Jan. 3 home game against Pomona Pitzer, the Panthers won’t have another home game until Feb. 6 against UC San Diego.

Home front: The Concordia women’s basketball team will spend the entire holiday season at home and began a seven-game homestand Monday with an 81-56 victory over La Verne.

Heather Carll and Jamie Gast each scored 15 points in the opener of the homestand, which concludes with the Eagle Invitational tournament Jan. 2 and 3.

Other local home games this week feature the Concordia men hosting Whittier Saturday and the Southern California College women hosting Trinity Christian of Illinois on Saturday.

Football honors: Chapman senior center Matt Hertzler was named to the national academic All-American team this week. Hertzler, who also was selected last season, is the only Chapman player ever selected.

Hertzler has a 3.80 grade-point average and majors in exercise physiology.

Punter Matt George was named to the All-West Region second team.

More Chapman honors: Addy Benard, Lisa Nitta and Monica Girard were named to the All-West Region women’s volleyball team. Benard, a senior, is a three-time selection.

In women’s soccer, sophomore Lehua Simmons and freshman Kristie Hoback were named to the first-team All-West Region. Simmons was named for the second time. In men’s soccer, Jason Hospedales, Mike Sterner and Alex Oropeza also earned all-region honors.
