El Modena Powers Its Way to Mann Wrestling Title

El Modena captured the team title at the Mann wrestling tournament by dominating the individual portion of the event Saturday at Loara High.

The Vanguards were first in the 103- and 160-pound weight classes.

In the 103-pound division, Jerin Williams defeated Tony Perez of Santa Ana, 9-6, to win the title. Perez finished second in the state championships at 103 pounds in 1997. At 160 pounds, Charlie Williams defeated Mike Quesnel of Laguna Hills, 12-5.

In the Vaquero wrestling Classic:

Irvine wins--Irvine won the team competition with 182 points. Goleta Dos Pueblos (135) finished second and Kennedy (120) was third.

In the Santa Margarita wrestling tournament:

El Toro wins--Kevin Amberson took first place in the 275-pound division to lead El Toro. Bellflower St. John Bosco finished second and Capistrano Valley was third.

In the Long Beach Millikan boys’ soccer tournament:

Canyon 5, Marina 3--Ahmed Khalil scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick.

Edison 3, Lakewood Mayfair 1--Devin Kato scored all three goals for Edison (4-2), which lost in the first round, 2-1, to Thousand Oaks. Jason Clifford scored the goal for the Chargers.

Los Alamitos 1, Long Beach Wilson 0--Tim Willemse scored Los Alamitos’ goal in the second half.

Santa Margarita 2, Thousand Oaks 0--Tim Pierce and Perry Valaskantjis scored one goal apiece for Santa Margarita in a second-round game.

In the Irvine boys’ soccer tournament:

Woodbridge 2, Laguna Hills 0--Saul Wolf and Yigao Kerszenbaum scored for Woodbridge in its semifinal victory.

Laguna Hills 2, Foothill 0--Robby Balogh and Kevin McConaughy each scored a goal for Laguna Hills (4-3-1) in the third-place game. Nick Adams had 13 saves for Foothill (3-1-2).

In the Magnolia girls’ soccer tournament:

Kennedy 3, Fullerton 1--Julie Oates had two assists and a goal for Kennedy (4-3-1), which will play Marina in the championship game at 3 p.m. Monday. The Fighting Irish outshot Fullerton, 19-1.

Laguna Beach 4, Orange Lutheran 0--Natalie Pivaroff recorded her 13th career shutout for Laguna Beach.

In the Villa Park girls’ soccer tournament:

Edison 4, No. 7 Villa Park 2--Cami Fleming scored two goals in the upset for Edison (5-2). Kristyn Pulver scored for Villa Park (6-2).
