KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A 450-pound lion that escaped from a theme park and was roaming central Florida’s tourist area was spotted Tuesday near Walt Disney World, but it eluded capture for a second day.
Officials stopped searching at sundown and planned to resume this morning.
Lt. Tom Quinn of the Florida Fish and Game Commission said airborne trackers saw the lion about noon in swampy woods near the JungleLand Zoo, where she escaped Monday.
“She’d found herself a high piece of ground but moved off before we could move in with tranquilizer guns,” Quinn said. Nala, a 2-year-old African lion named for a character in Disney’s movie “The Lion King,” is declawed but has a full set of teeth.
Residents and tourists were put on alert, but officials described the lioness as hand-raised and sociable.
