In the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament:
Irvine 63, Capistrano Valley 61--Chris Ferguson scored 26 points for Irvine in its second-round victory over Capistrano Valley.
In the Sonora Cage Classic boys’ basketball tournament:
No. 3 Tustin 67, Valencia 49--Carlos Lua scored a game-high 20 points for the host Tillers (8-0), including six three-point goals. Peter Johnston added 15 points, and Kenny Crabb scored 12, including three three-pointers.
Villa Park 73, No. 4 Sonora 69--Villa Park (5-2) was down by five points after three quarters, but came back to win by outscoring Sonora, 26-17, in the fourth.
Alex Will scored 30 points and made all seven of Villa Park’s three-pointers. Alan Verzani also contributed to Villa Park’s offense with 22 points and 19 rebounds. Jeff Berokoff and Marquis Worthy had 31 and 19 points, respectively, for Sonora (6-3).
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
No. 7 Katella 67, Anaheim 48--Don Carey scored 21 points and added 10 rebounds to lead the Knights (9-0). Brandon Jordan added 13 points. Tru Nguyen led the Colonists (4-5) with a game-high 22 points.
In the Gary Raya Coed Classic:
Aliso Niguel 67, Valencia 46--Kristen Moorhouse broke two school records by scoring 34 points, 10 in the third and fourth quarters, and grabbing 26 rebounds in Aliso Niguel’s (5-4) victory.
In the La Quinta girls’ basketball tournament:
No. 9 Edison 80, Norwalk Glenn 26--Melanie Cherney scored 13 points in a pool-play victory for Edison (8-0). Erika Harrison, Allison Libeu and Christina Patterson each scored 10 points for the Chargers.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Orange 65, Anaheim 38--Randi Perry grabbed 22 rebounds and scored 14 points for Orange in its victory over visiting Anaheim. Priscilla Deason added 26 points and 11 rebounds for Orange.
Santa Ana 27, Los Amigos 24--Claudia Torres scored 10 points for Santa Ana. Carol Tran and Karen Tucker led Los Amigos (0-5) with 10 and seven points, respectively.
In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:
Irvine 5, Sunny Hills 2--Eric Kim scored both of his goals in the first half as Irvine (2-1-2) built a 3-1 lead in the first-round game.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Aliso Niguel 1, No. 7 San Clemente 0--Sean Stutzman had nine saves in an upset for Aliso Niguel (1-2-4). The shutout was the second in a row for Stutzman. Mike Kendall scored the only goal in the first half.
San Clemente falls to 4-1-1.
Buena Park 3, Bellflower 2--Juan Trejo scored all three goals for Buena Park in its victory over Bellflower. Trejo has scored eight goals this season.
No. 5 Capistrano Valley 2, No. 2 Santa Margarita 2--Tim Pierce’s goal with a minute left tied the score and spared Santa Margarita the loss at Saddleback College.
The Cougars (4-1-1) took a 2-0 lead on goals by Bill Hierl and Phil Latini. Santa Margarita’s Nick Sparks scored in the 48th minute to cut Capistrano Valley’s lead to one and set up the late-game heroics by Pierce.
Costa Mesa 1, Tustin 0--Junior David Tran scored off a pass from Christian Alvarez with four minutes left in the first half for Costa Mesa (4-2-2).
No. 9 Fountain Valley 5, Laguna Beach 1--Fountain Valley’s Peter Fatzaun had two second-half saves as the Barons (4-2-1) scored four second-half goals to give Laguna Beach its first loss of the season. Aaron Siemers and Aaron Carter each had a goal and two assists for Fountain Valley.
The Artists drop to 4-1-1.
No. 10 Laguna Hills 2, Foothill 1--Brian Shim scored a goal in the 61st minute to give Laguna Hills (5-3-1) the lead for good.
Foothill (3-2-3) had a 1-0 lead when Bryan Doi scored eight minutes into the second half to tie the score.
No. 1 Santa Ana 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Santa Ana’s Danny Gonzalez scored the lone goal in the 25th minute of the second half. The Saints improved to 5-1.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
No. 2 Mission Viejo 4, No. 5 EL Toro 0--Hannah Cochrun had three saves in a shutout victory for Mission Viejo (4-0-1). Amber Skallerud scored two goals for the Diablos.
El Toro falls to 3-1.
In the Vanguard Cup girls’ soccer tournament:
No. 6 Mater Dei 4, Brea Olinda 1--Sophomore Kelsie Ganshert scored her first varsity goal. Junior Tracey Winzen scored her ninth goal of the season. Erinn Goletz and Alison Fennell also scored for the Monarchs (4-0-1). Raechel Slocum-Johnson made four saves for Mater Dei.
In nonleague girls’ water polo:
No. 7 Edison 7, Long Beach Millikan 1--Kami Fleming scored three goals for Edison in its victory over host Long Beach Millikan.
No. 9 Foothill 13, Corona del Mar 6--Daylene Coberly scored six goals in a nonleague victory for Foothill (5-1). Eight of the Knights’ goals were scored on breakaways.
