The best games take place in Santa Barbara, where four of the top six county teams are in the Tournament of Champions. Top-ranked Brea Olinda is seeded third. The Ladycats are on the same side of the bracket as third-ranked Esperanza and fourth-ranked Capistrano Valley. In the first round, Esperanza will play four-time defending state champion Gillette (Wyo.) Campbell County and Capistrano Valley will play Orem (Utah) Mountain View, whose 53-game winning streak is the nation’s second-longest. Brea opens against Chino. Sixth-ranked Mater Dei faces Berkeley, the defending state champion in Division I. The favorite is Brooklyn (N.Y.) Christ the King, the top-ranked team in the country. The tournament runs through Tuesday at Santa Barbara City College.
The title game of the La Quinta Aztec Classic is Friday (7:30 p.m.). The title game for the Gary Raya Co-Ed Classic is Saturday (6 p.m.) at El Dorado. The title game for the Lakewood Artesia-Brethren Christian tournament is Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) at Lakewood Artesia High. Fifth-ranked Marina and Calvary Chapel are in the tournament.
