Closed HOV Lane

Share

If Caltrans and the Los Angeles MTA’s purpose is to provide improved transportation service to the public, then why have they kept over five miles of functional freeway lanes closed to traffic?

The 5.8-mile stretch of high-occupancy vehicle lane on the southbound 405, from Lakewood to the 605 Freeway, is completed but remains closed. The stretch runs directly into the open HOV lane in Orange County and so would not involve any lane terminations. Over 2.5 miles of this stretch have been closed in this condition for almost a year. In fact, this 2.5-mile stretch had been open, up to two years ago. It was closed using miles of concrete barriers for almost a year, had no observable improvements made to it when the barriers were removed, and has sat idle, marked by plastic posts since then.
