What: Fishing book and video.

For the fisherman on your holiday gift list, a couple of last-minute recommendations:

The third edition of “The Baja Catch, a Fishing & Remote Camping Manual for Baja California” is an essential reference for anyone planning a first fishing trip south of the border or in need of a refresher course.

Authors Neil Kelly and Gene Kira boast catching and releasing more than 30,000 fish while visiting “virtually every spot in Baja California where a four-wheel-drive vehicle can be driven to the beach and a small boat can be manhandled into the water.” Their manual features photos, maps, mileage charts and Spanish lessons geared to the fisherman.

Published by Apples & Oranges, “The Baja Catch” lists $26.65. The book can be ordered by phone at (619) 751-8868.

Last year, Michael Fowlkes, producer of Fox Sports West’s Inside Sportfishing, was among the first group of visitors to Midway Atoll since it began allowing nonmilitary personnel for the first time since before World War II.

In the video “Midway, Part 1. History and Inshore Magic,” Fowlkes does a good job chronicling events leading up to the famous Battle of Midway, but the true strength of his book lies in his description--and in the brilliant underwater photography of Bill Wilson--of the fantastic inshore fishing that has developed undisturbed for the past 50-plus years.

“Midway” lists at $39.95 and can be ordered by phone at (800) 262-6070.
