Mater Dei Advances in Soccer Tournament

Tracy Winzen scored 15 minutes into the second half to lift sixth-ranked Mater Dei past University, 1-0, in the second round of the Ocean View girls’ soccer tournament Saturday at Golden West College.

Goalkeeper Rachel Slocum-Johnson stopped five shots for her fourth shutout for the Monarchs (7-0-1), who will play Huntington Beach in the semifinals Monday at Golden West.

In another Ocean View tournament quarterfinal game:

Huntington Beach 5, Lakewood St. Joseph 0--Kendra Brissey scored three goals for Huntington Beach (5-5).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

No. 1 Capistrano Valley 3, Irvine 0--Kim and Megan Abbamonto each scored a goal for Capistrano Valley (9-0). Goalkeeper Haley Kuhn had two saves for her fourth shutout.

Irvine drops to 1-5-1.

In the Marina boys’ soccer tournament:

No. 6 Fountain Valley 1, Dana Hills 0 (Fountain Valley advances on penalty kicks, 3-2)--Chris Wimmer’s successful penalty kick gave Fountain Valley a one-goal edge with one attempt remaining for Dana Hills. Leo Compean’s try hit the right post and Dana Hills lost the second-round game.

In the first round, Nick Tolman scored in the 35th minute to give Fountain Valley (7-2-1) a two-goal lead in a 2-1 victory over Santiago.

Ocean View 1, Torrance 0 (Ocean View advances on penalty kicks, 6-5)--Clay Monroe made six saves in regulation and had three more in the shootout for Ocean View (9-4).

In the first round, John Clark scored the only goal in the Seahawks’ 1-0 victory over Apple Valley.

San Clemente 2, Riverside North 1--Chris Winrich scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with three minutes remaining for San Clemente (6-1-2). Chad Vains tied the score with 10 minutes left after the Tritons fell behind, 1-0, at halftime.

Nate Kensinger, Bryce Sebastian and Jimmy Marino each scored goals in a 3-0 victory over North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake in the first round.

In the Trabuco Hills boys’ soccer tournament:

Trabuco Hills 1, No. 2 Woodbridge 0 (Trabuco Hills advances on penalty kicks, 3-2)--Kit Hager made the deciding penalty kick for the Mustangs (5-3-2) in the quarterfinal game.

Villa Park 3, Argyle (Canada) 2 (Villa Park advances on penalty kicks, 9-8)--Lee Berry made the winning penalty kick for Villa Park (5-5). Argyle’s Jon Friesz had a chance to tie the shootout but his attempt was blocked by Villa Park goalkeeper Joe Oftelie.

In the Costa Mesa girls’ basketball tournament:

Villa Park 49, North Torrance 38--Tiffany Wood scored 16 points and Missy Bynon had 13 for Villa Park (6-2), which advanced to the semifinals Monday.

Laguna Hills 46, Los Angeles Garfield 31--Shannon Owens scored nine of her 13 points in the third quarter to extend Laguna Hills’ one-point halftime lead. Erin Larsen had 16 rebounds and six steals for Laguna Hills (1-6) in the consolation game.

Tustin 55, Montebello Schurr 40--Brooke Brown scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds in a consolation victory for Tustin (8-3). Susana Jara scored 15 points for the Tillers.

In the Cerritos Gahr girls’ basketball tournament:

No. 3 Esperanza 71, Durango (Nev.) 19--Allison Gerber scored 25 points in the quarterfinals for Esperanza (6-5).
