Higgins to Seek Medical Redshirt
After consulting with doctors, Cal State Northridge guard Derrick Higgins decided Tuesday to sit out the rest of the season and apply for medical redshirt status.
Higgins, a senior, played in five games before being sidelined with a stress fracture in his right foot. He will undergo surgery in about two weeks and a metal screw will be placed in the foot, Coach Bobby Braswell said.
Higgins already had a medical redshirt season in 1995-96 because of a stress fracture in his left foot, but Braswell said chances are good that the NCAA will grant him another.
“A second redshirt year because of injury happens more than people think,” Braswell said. “As long as there is documentation of surgery and he has played in fewer than six games, he can get it.”
Higgins averaged 10.2 points and is the team’s best defender.
