Drums of Acid, Oil Found by Freeway
The California Highway Patrol is asking for help identifying who left three barrels of chromic acid found Monday morning alongside the Ventura Freeway on the Conejo Grade.
The acid, commonly used by metal-plating businesses, was found in three 55-gallon drums on the southbound side of the freeway, just south of the truck scales on the grade, said CHP Officer Joseph Davy.
“Some Department of Transportation workers were doing routine maintenance when they came across the barrels,” Davy said.
The drums of acid, as well as four 10-gallon metal containers filled with used crankcase oil, had been abandoned about 70 feet from the shoulder of the road. None of the acid or oil spilled out of the containers, Davy said.
MSE Inc., a hazardous waste disposal company in Camarillo, identified the acid, transferred it into safe containers and hauled it away, Davy said.
“We’re hoping someone saw the dumping, which we believe took place in the last 24 to 48 hours,” he said.
