Pettitte Is Better, Won’t Miss Start

Andy Pettitte, hit in the leg by a hard grounder the previous night, said Tuesday that he does not expect to miss a start for the New York Yankees.

Pettitte sustained a bruised left calf when he was struck by Javy Lopez’s one-hopper in the fifth inning Monday night. Pettitte finished the inning, but gingerly walked off the mound after throwing four warmup pitches to start the sixth.

The left-hander got a no-decision in the Yankees’ 1-0 win over Atlanta in 10 innings. He is 8-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 18 starts, and was runnerup to Pat Hentgen for the AL Cy Young Award last year.

Pettitte was examined Tuesday and said his leg was feeling better. His next start is scheduled for Saturday at Toronto against Hentgen and the Blue Jays.
