An officer en route to a traffic collision in south Oxnard on Thursday afternoon found himself involved in a crash as he drove through an intersection with his emergency lights flashing and siren blaring, police said.

Officer Humberto Jimenez and the three occupants of the other car involved in the collision were treated for minor injuries at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and released after the 2 p.m. accident at Channel Islands Boulevard and Ventura Road.

The accident occurred as Jimenez drove south on Ventura Road against a red light, a witness said.

Other vehicles on Channel Islands Boulevard had stopped, but the eastbound car driven by Carol Ann Taylor, 44, of Camarillo struck Jimenez’s patrol car broadside. The police cruiser spun around, ending up on the Ventura Road median; it also struck a Toyota sports utility vehicle driven by 41-year-old Jaime Alberto Ricaurte of Oxnard, who was waiting to turn left onto the boulevard from Ventura Road, police said.

“It would have kept spinning had the Toyota not been there,” said a truck driver who saw the accident but declined to give her name. “The cop got the worst of it. He got jolted pretty good.”

No citations have been issued, said Joe Kaniewski, a traffic investigator with the Oxnard Police Department.
