4-Vehicle Crash Hurts 6, Shuts Freeway

Six people were hurt in a four-vehicle accident that closed the Antelope Valley Freeway early Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for five hours. It was the second time in 24 hours that the route, used heavily on holidays, was shut down. A brush fire forced closure of the entire freeway in Placerita Canyon for several hours Thursday afternoon.

The 1:40 a.m. accident involved a private-contract U.S. Postal Service rig that flipped over in the southbound lanes of the freeway near Santiago Road. The truck was then hit by two passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer carrying about 45,000 pounds of sod, said CHP Officer Karen Faciane.

Packages, letters and grass were scattered across several lanes of the freeway, the CHP said.

Four people suffered minor injuries in the collision and were transported to local hospitals. The two truck drivers were shaken but unhurt, officials said.
