The superintendent of the El Segundo Unified School District resigned this week to take an administrative post in Orange County, district officials said.

The departure of William Manahan comes as the 2,600-student district is seeking new principals for three of its four schools.

Manahan is widely credited with resolving district financial difficulties during his nearly seven years at the helm, and with helping raise teacher salaries, once the lowest of any unified district in Los Angeles

County. He added several features to the schools, including special reading teachers and an applied science technology lab at the middle school.

In June, however, voters narrowly rejected a bond measure to build classrooms and refurbish worn out campuses for the growing district, a vote that deeply disappointed Manahan.

He will become assistant superintendent in the 32,000-student Saddleback Valley Unified School District in Mission Viejo, one of the fastest-growing districts in the state.

Manahan launched his education career with Saddleback and remained there for many years before coming to El Segundo in 1990.
