Neighborhood Shuttle Service Called Success

The Southside Smart Shuttle, the first-of-a-kind neighborhood shuttle designed to provide convenient transportation to the residents of South-Central Los Angeles, is proving to be a major success, MTA officials said Thursday.

More then 500 people a day are riding the shuttle service, which consists of four 15-passenger mini-buses and operates along Vermont Avenue between the Green Line (at the Century Freeway) and Slauson Avenue, an MTA spokesman said.

The shuttle, which began operations June 29, will be free until July 29, when fares will be 90 cents. “This program is the first of its kind for the MTA and won’t be the last,” said MTA board member Mel Wilson.

The shuttle runs every half-hour from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. In addition, if riders call ahead, the buses will deviate from their normal route to pick up and drop off passengers within the shuttle boundaries.

Those boundaries are Slauson Avenue on the north, 120th Street on the south, the Harbor Freeway on the east and Normandie Avenue on the west. Once fares are charged, this service will cost an additional 90 cents.
