Meeting to Offer Details on Proposed Fire Levy

The Arcadia City Council will hold a public meeting Tuesday on a proposed annual assessment that would provide $2.2 million for fire services.

With property owners asking numerous questions about the new mail-in election being used to decide the fate of the assessment, city officials are holding the meeting to ensure a better understanding of the need for the levy and the balloting, said Linda Garcia, city administrative coordinator.

Last year, California voters approved Proposition 218, which allows property owners to approve assessments by mail.

Ballots have been sent to all Arcadia property owners. They have until Aug. 5 to mail them back to City Hall.

Votes are weighted according to how much tax each property owner pays. The biggest will be the city, which must pay about $10,000 annually. That means the council will get to cast the most votes of any property owner.

The council at Tuesday’s public meeting will also decide how it will cast those ballots.
