Two Share Lead at Senior Players Championship

Larry Gilbert and Dana Quigley, both career club pros before turning 50, each shot five-under-par 67s to share a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior Players Championship Thursday at Dearborn, Mich. South African John Bland and Dave Stockton were both at 68, one stroke better than Jack Nicklaus, John Schroeder, Vincente Fernandez and Larry Mowry.

Graham Marsh, a three-time winner this year, was tied with defending champion Raymond Floyd at 70.

Tom Lehman shot a five-under 66 and took the second-round lead in the weather-plagued $1.34-million Gulfstream World Invitational at Loch Lomond, Scotland. . . . Gary Hallberg, who has missed the cut in his last 18 PGA Tour events, shot a five-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Quad City Classic at Coal Valley, Ill.

Boxing

Promoter Don King said he would stand by former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, whose license was revoked after his biting episode with champion Evander Holyfield.

“The Nevada State Athletic Commission did what they felt they had to do, and I am not going to second-guess the decision,” King said in a statement. “I am not making excuses for Mike, but I know him and I know that he’s a good human being. . . . What happened that night was an aberration, a sad episode that all of us wish could have been avoided.”

Washington signed unrestricted free agent and long snapper Dan Turk, who played with Oakland last season. He will join his younger brother Matt, the Redskins’ Pro Bowl punter last season. . . . Chicago signed free agents Haywood Jeffires and Kevin Scott to one-year contracts. . . . Green Bay claimed running back Aaron Hayden off waivers from San Diego and rookie kicker Ryan Longwell from San Francisco.

A right arm injury forced Wimbledon finalist Cedric Pioline of France to withdraw from his second-round match against Alex Corretja of Spain at the Swiss Open in Gstaad. . . . Boris Becker entered the U.S. Open, which probably will be his last Grand Slam event.

Auto Racing

The Indy Racing League has fined A.J. Foyt and Arie Luyendyk for their Victory Lane altercation after last month’s inaugural True Value 500K. Foyt was fined $20,000, and Luyendyk was fined $14,000 for the unsportsmanlike behavior they demonstrated after the June 7 race.

Jurisprudence

Former NASCAR team owner Junior Johnson and his company have filed a lawsuit against Brett Bodine, his wife and two companies owned by the Bodines to try to recover more than $51,000, though the lawsuit, filed in North Carolina, did not say what the money was for.

Redskin running back Terry Allen was charged with driving under the influence and fleeing police at 133 mph before crashing his Ferrari into a tree in Monroe, Ga.

Jermaine O’Neal of the Portland Trail Blazers received a 15-day suspended sentence for disorderly conduct in Columbia, S.C.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman acted as an arbitrator between representatives of current New York Islander owner John Spano and former owner John Pickett to determine who owns the team. According to a New York Post report, Spano, 33, would give the team back to Pickett before Bettman could make a ruling. Spano was suspended by Bettman from day-to-day operations of the Islanders after Pickett charged Spano missed a scheduled $17-million payment required for the purchase of the team.

Ottawa signed free-agent center Derek Armstrong, who played for the Islanders last season, and goaltender Jani Hurme, the MVP of the Finnish elite league.

Pro Basketball

Garry St. Jean, a former Golden State assistant and coach of the Sacramento Kings for 4 1/2 seasons until he was fired in March, was hired as the Warriors’ general manager. . . . Former USC guard Rodrick Rhodes, drafted in the first round by Houston, signed a three-year contract with the team. . . . Former Illinois guard Kiwane Garris, who went unpicked in the NBA draft, is practicing with the Clippers. . . . Free agents Antoine Carr and Shandon Anderson were re-signed by the Utah Jazz. Carr signed a one-year deal. Anderson signed a two-year deal. . . . John Thomas, the New York Knicks’ first-round draft pick from Minnesota, signed a multiyear contract.

Miscellany

The NCAA has notified Purdue that it will conduct a preliminary inquiry into the men’s basketball program because of possible recruiting violations. . . . Twelve monohulls are on a pace to beat Merlin’s 20-year-old record in the Transpacific Yacht Race.
