More Northridge Cutback Backlash

Share

I continue to be stunned at the decision by Cal State Northridge to delete men’s volleyball, baseball, soccer and swimming. I never thought my family and son would be so directly affected by discrimination based on quotas in a state that rejected this concept as unconstitutional. If this is what the athletic department and administration of CSUN wants, then I want no part of them or their university.

My family began our association with the athletic department last year due to the good reputation of CSUN men’s volleyball and the coaching of John Price and Jeff Campbell. Both coaches were up front and showed respect to my son, a volleyball team member who has benefited from and admired their leadership. This professional attitude, loyalty and respect never wavered for the entire 1996-97 volleyball season. For this I am most grateful.

I know the players of the men’s sports affected have endured a major hardship. They chose CSUN because of the university’s winning tradition, especially in baseball and volleyball. These quality athletes are winners and as winners they will find other programs who want and respect their abilities.

The people who lose in this decision are the citizens of Northridge, the alumni, the college community, coaches, and students who are denied men’s athletics as a part of their college experience. Who made this decision anyway? Who is available for comment? Who is responsible for mismanagement of $800,000 of athletic funds? Who has devastated CSUN athletics? The person or persons responsible are the real losers in this travesty and rightfully should be held accountable. They should be remembered for the legacy they have left CSUN.

The earthquake devastated Northridge and the university. But the community rallied in support to rebuild. The athletic earthquake has again destroyed CSUN. Will anyone really care this time or bother to support the future of Matador athletics? I choose not to be one of those supporters.

Thanks to Cathie Wright, the Simi Valley state senator, Cal State Northridge could receive $586,000.00 to save its canceled men’s sports. This unexpected windfall has Blenda Wilson and Ron Kopita speechless.

They don’t know what to say, other than to find excuses why they don’t want the money.

The money apparently fouls up their plans to terminate men’s sports.

Well, I have a suggestion. Use the money for severance packages for Wilson and Kopita. Some things do not deserve to be saved.
