Rockies’ Ritz Likely Out for Season

Colorado right-hander Kevin Ritz will probably be sidelined the rest of the season because of a torn muscle in his pitching shoulder.

“With that, he’s probably done,” Colorado Manager Don Baylor said Saturday. “It seems like every other day, every third day, somebody is getting hurt and has to be bumped out of the rotation.”

Ritz, 6-8 with a 5.87 earned-run average in 18 starts this season after winning 17 games last season, was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday night against San Diego because of tightness in his arm.

“Surgery is probably going to happen. When and by whom are the only questions to be answered,” said Ritz, who missed the entire 1993 season after reconstructive surgery on his right elbow. “I’ve felt pain for about a month now and pitched through it. It just gradually got worse.”

Ritz’s roster spot will be taken by Roger Bailey, who will return from the disabled list Tuesday to start against the Dodgers.

The Cincinnati Reds put third baseman Terry Pendleton on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left knee. It’s the second time in the last three weeks the Reds have put Pendleton on the disabled list. He fouled a ball off his foot and suffered a hairline fracture in the big toe on his right foot June 22.

Cincinnati put him on the disabled list the next day, but the National League voided the move three days later, saying he was not injured severely enough.

The Reds plan to recall infielder Eric Owens from triple-A Indianapolis today. Owens hit .308 with nine homers, 36 runs batted in and 19 stolen bases in 75 games for Indianapolis.
