Attempts Stall to Hire Golf-Course Builder

Share

The City Council is at a standstill in its attempts to hire a builder for a municipal golf course.

Council members Gene Wisner and Hank Wedaa voted in favor of the staff recommendation to hire American Golf Co., but Mayor Mark Schwing and Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Kiley cast their votes in favor of Kemper Golf Co.

Councilman John M. Gullixson abstained, saying he did not have enough information to make a decision because he was not able to attend a meeting at which the two proposals were discussed.

The city plans to build an 18- or 27-hole course on a 205-acre parcel. The cost is projected at $11 million, money that would be recovered quickly, officials said, because the facility would earn the city $1.4 million in its first year. By the fifth year, it is projected to make a $2.5 million profit.

Green fees would probably be $55 during the week and $75 on weekends. Gullixson said he hopes to negotiate a discount for Yorba Linda residents.
