The owner of a Miami houseboat where Andrew Phillip Cunanan was found dead Wednesday evening owns a health spa catering to gays a few blocks east of the Las Vegas Strip.

Torsten Reineck is the sole owner of the Apollo Spa and Health Club, a small business in a complex known as the Commercial Center, according to the Clark County Business License Department.

Authorities in Miami said the body found inside the houseboat was 27-year-old Cunanan, a suspect in five murders, including that of fashion designer Gianni Versace.

The spa’s classified advertisement in a Las Vegas visitors’ publication read: “Alternatives. Alternative for Men Only. Apollo Spa and Health Club. Pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam, workout and private dressing rooms.”

There were some reports that sad Reineck was in Germany. Other reports put him in Mexico.

Jay Vaswani, owner of India Sweets and Spices, next door to the spa, said he saw Reineck on Tuesday. He described the owner as a German who drives a car with Florida license plates.

Vaswani said that the Apollo was a women’s health club until Reineck bought it and that he reopened it last year as a gay health spa.

“He spent a lot of money. It’s strictly for gays,” Vaswani said.

A sign hanging over the front door said “Open,” although most men left when they saw television cameras following them as they walked toward the club.

A man at the entrance to the club said only members were allowed inside.

A Clark County official said Reineck was issued his business license in August 1996 and listed him as a resident of Miami Beach.
