Public Role Is Sought for Balboa Peninsula
Hoping to get the public involved in a plan to revitalize the Balboa Peninsula, the City Council on Monday will consider establishing a committee to work on the project.
“It gives people a place to come in a less intimidating format than City Council where they can ask questions and make suggestions,” Councilman John E. Noyes Jr. said.
Noyes, who suggested the panel, said he hoped monthly public meetings on the Balboa project would increase public awareness and participation.
In March, the council adopted a sweeping plan to improve the area by repairing roads, improving parking near business districts, landscaping the main streets and installing a monument or fountain at the intersection of Newport and Balboa boulevards.
The proposal has drawn a number of vocal opponents who have raised concerns that the casual atmosphere of the peninsula would be destroyed.
Noyes, Councilman John W. Hedges and Mayor Janice A. Debay will probably sit on the committee if one is established.
The council will discuss the plan and other business when it meets at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 3300 W. Newport Blvd.
