City to Consider Ban on Cheap Handguns

Share

City Council members Monday night will discuss a resolution of support for a bill that would ban the manufacture of cheap handguns in California.

The bill was written by Sen. Richard Polanco (D-Los Angeles). Officials say these handguns are becoming the weapon of choice for criminals. Polanco’s bill would provide up to one year in jail or prison for anyone who manufactures, imports into the state or sells nonsporting handguns.

If passed, the law would take effect Jan. 1, 1999.

Polanco wrote to the Ventura City Council several weeks ago asking for its support.

Most council members reached Friday said they could support such a resolution.
