Gerhard Berger, the oldest driver on the Formula One circuit, made a spectacular comeback, winning the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim for his first triumph in three years.

Berger, a 37-year-old Austrian who is leaving Benetton after this year and has been considering retirement, gave Benetton-Renault its first victory since 1995, when Michael Schumacher won the Grand Prix of Japan.

He covered the 45 laps in 1 hour 20 minutes, 59.046 seconds, averaging 141.036 mph. He also clocked the fastest lap, 144.012 mph.

Cory McClenathan, Ron Capps and Jim Yates posted victories at the 10th annual Autolite Nationals at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma. The $1,205,700 event was the 13th stop in the 22-race, $30-million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

McClenathan, of Anaheim, took the Top Fuel title; Yates, of Alexandria, Va., won the Pro Stock title; and Capps, of San Diego, the Funny Car title.

McClenathan and Yates gave former NFL coach Joe Gibbs and his McDonald’s Racing Team two victories for the second week in a row.

Joe Ruttman muscled his Ford past the Chevrolet of Jack Sprague with less than a mile to go to win the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Lund Look 275K at Topeka, Kan.

Mark Evans drove the PICO American Dream to victory in the Budweiser Columbia Cup after Miss Budweiser, the top boat on the unlimited hydroplane circuit, flipped in the final heat at Kennewick, Wash.

Budweiser driver Dave Villwock was treated at Kennewick General Hospital for a broken right arm, a possible concussion, a bad cut across the top of his right wrist and other injuries. The 42-year-old driver was then flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
