Historic Library Branch to Open After Renovation
For seven years, residents of a South-Central Los Angeles neighborhood near Vermont and Slauson avenues waited for the rebirth of the Los Angeles Public Library’s historic John Muir branch, closed in 1990 because of structural damage caused by decades of earthquakes.
The wait is over as the renovated and expanded Mediterranean-style library, built in 1930, reopens today with a celebration that begins at 10 a.m.
“I am delighted that this new John Muir Branch Library has not only retained the historic integrity of the original building, but that it has been updated, modernized and expanded to continue serving the growing community,” said Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas.
Inside the library at 6001 S. Vermont Ave. is a stainless steel sculpture designed by James T. Russell that features a base containing the handprints of residents.
