Man Struck, Killed After Stopping Van on Freeway
A 46-year-old man was struck and killed Wednesday after stopping to check his van on the Orange Freeway, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Rodolfo Martinez of La Puente died at St. Jude Medical Center shortly after the 2:30 a.m. crash. His year-old son, who was in the van, suffered minor injuries, said Karen Bowen, a CHP spokeswoman.
Authorities suspect Martinez stopped to investigate a mechanical problem with the van, although nothing was obvious to CHP officials who examined it Wednesday, Bowen said.
The driver of a Dodge pickup traveling behind Martinez in the northbound lane failed to see the van in time and hit it, Bowen said. Investigators were unsure where Martinez was at the time of the crash.
The driver of the pickup also suffered minor injuries. He was not cited, Bowen said.
