In a nonleague game:

City of Industry Workman 32, Bolsa Grande 27--Workman quarterback David Rivera scored the winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 10 seconds left to play at Bolsa Grande.

The Matadors (3-6) had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds. After unsportsmanlike-conduct and pass-interference penalties put the ball at Workman’s 35, Bolsa Grande, with no time left on the clock, tried a desperation pass that was intercepted.

Bolsa Grande seemed to have the game in hand with a 27-18 lead with 7:29 remaining.

But Workman (3-5-1) prevailed because its strong running game outperformed the Matadors’ strong passing game.

Workman running back Chris Williams carried 30 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns. The Lobos ran the same play, a toss trap, over and over, and the Bolsa Grande defense was helpless to stop it.

The Matadors countered with their combination of quarterback Doug Baughman and receiver Sam Baeder, but it wasn’t enough. Baeder caught nine passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Baughman threw for 275 yards, but had four passes intercepted, three by Workman linebacker Johnny Farias.

Bolsa Grande took a 20-12 lead at the half when Baughman hit Baeder with a 44-yard pass as time expired.
