3 More Carport Fires May Be Linked to Arsonist
Three carport fires early Monday may have been the work of a suspected arsonist believed to have set more than a dozen such blazes across the San Gabriel Valley in the past year, authorities said.
The first fire was apparently set beneath a car in a Monterey Park apartment building in the 600 block of North Chandler Avenue, said Monterey Park Battalion Chief Tim Murphy. The owner of the car reported the blaze about 4 a.m., which firefighters extinguished in about five minutes.
About 10 minutes later, firefighters received a report of another blaze about nine blocks away, in the 200 block of South Chandler Road. Two units from the first fire responded to the second blaze, which also started beneath a vehicle in a carport. A resident in an apartment across the street reported the fire.
A third possible arson apparently set about 5 a.m. damaged an Alhambra carport.
No injuries were reported in any of the fires, and damage was limited to the carports and the vehicles.
