Matadors to Face Baldwin?

Paul Bubb, Cal State Northridge athletic director, contacted San Jose State on Monday to explore a possible road game against the Spartans next season.

The Spartans, a Division I-A program, recently found themselves without an Oct. 3 game after California pulled out to schedule Nebraska.

San Jose State is coached by Dave Baldwin, who coached Northridge in 1995 and ’96.

“I don’t mind playing San Jose State, but I want to know when and [for] how much,” Northridge Coach Jim Fenwick said.

A potential obstacle is that Northridge is scheduled to play host to Southern Utah in a nonconference game Oct. 3. The Matadors have open dates Sept. 5 and Nov. 14 and can only fill one to stay within an 11-game regular-season limit.

Bubb said he was contacted by Marshall and Nevada, each with guarantees of more than $100,000, to play next season but could not work out a date. He is talking to Navy and Army about games.

Matador linebacker Marc Goodson was selected Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week after making 16 tackles, 12 unassisted, in Northridge’s 31-22 victory over Idaho State on Saturday.

Goodson, a senior All-American, became the school’s career leader in unassisted tackles with 146, assisted tackles with 117 and total tackles with 263.

Northridge (5-5, 3-3 in Big Sky play) is ranked 42nd in The Sports Network poll.

For the record: Ron Foster, the commentator on Northridge’s KCSN-FM (88.5) radio broadcasts was misidentified in Sunday’s edition.
