Alexander Inconsistent

Tim Alexander, Oregon State’s versatile quarterback, is fit, but his status is week to week.

That’s because his performances vary dramatically.

Against California two weeks ago, he completed only four of 15 passes for 35 yards before being pulled.

Then last week against Arizona, he competed 18 of 32 for 211 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions.

Alexander, a threat to run as well, has even lined up at receiver and tailback.

“He is a special guy,” said Oregon State Coach Mike Riley, adding that Alexander is growing as a quarterback. “He’s a guy who had never passed the ball a lot, especially from a drop-back scheme. We like to get him on the move . . . and let him utilize his ability. He’s a threat in a lot of ways.”

With USC’s tailback injury crisis easing, senior Delon Washington will start today, despite his arthritic knee, but freshman Malaefou MacKenzie and sophomore Chad Morton are expected to get carries.

The only tailback out is LaVale Woods, who finally resumed practicing this week after hurting his ankle Oct. 4. Woods didn’t make the trip but is hoping to play next week against UCLA.
