Prescott’s Big Day Not Unexpected

It had been done before against Cal State Northridge so it was a good bet Rex Prescott could run against the Matadors.

Prescott’s 212 yards were the third-highest rushing total allowed by Northridge this season.

Freshman Charles Dunn had 250 yards rushing in Portland State’s 26-13 victory over Northridge on Oct. 4 and Denvis Manns had 221 in New Mexico State’s 28-18 victory over the Matadors on Sept. 13.

“He’s a strong little guy,” Jim Fenwick, Northridge’s coach, said of Prescott. “They use him very well.”

Three key Northridge players, starting cornerback Donnell Day, running back-return specialist Marcus Harvey and guard Ricardo Camacho did not make the trip to Cheney.

Day was attending funeral services for his great grandmother, Harvey was nursing a sprained back and Camacho stayed behind because his grandmother is ill.

Junior Tayari Ferrell replaced Day in the starting lineup.

The absence of Day, Harvey and Camacho allowed Fenwick to include Chris Kobe on the 48-man travel roster, although the redshirt freshman quarterback from Saugus High wasn’t expected to play.

“Kobe had never had an opportunity to travel, so I just brought him up,” Fenwick said.

For the second consecutive week, linebacker Marc Goodson blocked an extra point, giving him the only two by the Matadors this season.

Josh Atwood of Eastern Washington made 47 extra points without a miss this season, including the first three against Northridge, until Goodson blocked his kick early in the third quarter.

Goodson, an All-American last year, had an interception against Eastern Washington and finished with 12 tackles. He leads Northridge with 125 tackles.

David Romines, Northridge’s career receiving record holder with 2,259 yards, has signed to play with the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena League, Matador assistant Jeff Kearin said.

Romines last season set Matador single-season records with 87 receptions, 1,300 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns.
