Duke Makes Krzyzewski’s Weekend Complete

Mike Krzyzewski’s homecoming was just what everyone thought it would be.

The Duke coach had an enjoyable weekend back at West Point, his alma mater and former employer, and his third-ranked Blue Devils looked impressive in a 78-45 victory over Army on Sunday.

“I got to see so many of my former players and brought a Duke team here for the first time,” Krzyzewski said. “It was just great. It got a little distracting today at times, but I think that’s when my team played better.”

The season opener for both schools was supposed to be a blowout for Duke and the Blue Devils used it as a chance to show off their depth, defensive prowess and heralded freshman class.

The game was also the college coaching debut for Pat Harris, a point guard at Army under Krzyzewski at West Point. Krzyzewski’s career started the same way as he played point guard under Coach Bob Knight and then returned for his first head coaching position.

Freshmen Shane Battier and Elton Brand led Duke with 15 and 12 points, respectively, while sophomore Chris Carrawell added 10 as 10 Blue Devils scored.

No. 15 Iowa 112, North Texas 64--Although Iowa has scored 100 points in each of its first two games, Coach Tom Davis said the Hawkeyes are far from perfect after the blowout at Iowa City. But he would probably get an argument from North Texas Coach Vic Trilli.

“They’re probably about 20 years ahead of us, but boy, they’re talented,” said Trilli, in his first year at North Texas after eight years as an assistant at Texas.

Davis, whose team scored a 105-60 victory over Chicago State on Friday, said there are some areas that need work despite the wide margin of victory. The Hawkeyes turned the ball over 25 times.

Ricky Davis scored 19 points and J.R. Koch added 18 for Iowa.

Boston College 87, Central Connecticut St. 54--Duane Woodward scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half for the new-look Eagles at Boston in Al Skinner’s debut as their coach.

The Eagles, holding a 19-16 lead, used a 17-0 run during a 3:10 stretch midway into the opening half to break open the game.

Missouri 85, W. Carolina 64--Tyron Lee scored 20 points as the Tigers (1-0) won their 24th consecutive home opener at Columbia, Mo. Western Carolina fell to 0-2.

Arkansas 114, N.E. Illinois 56--The Razorbacks, in their season opener, scored the first eight points and routed Northeastern Illinois at Fayetteville, Ark.

The Razorbacks took a 23-point halftime lead despite shooting 37.5% from the field.
