GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS AT A GLANCE
Torrance Bishop Montgomery (16-1) vs. Ocean View (16-1)
5 TONIGHT: LONG BEACH STATE’S WEST GYM
Ocean View has waited all season to meet Bishop Montgomery in this Southern Section Division III-A championship match. Tracy Lindquist played on the beach with Bishop Montgomery setter Chrissie Zartman last summer, and the Knights ended the Seahawks’ season last year in the section semifinals. Ocean View’s only loss was to Lakewood St. Joseph’s, a team Bishop Montgomery beat twice in league play. But Ocean View won at the Orange County Championships, where Bishop Montgomery finished 19th.

Corona del Mar (12-7) vs. La Habra (14-3)
7:30 TONIGHT: LONG BEACH STATE
The 10 losses between the two teams is misleading. Corona del Mar lost six of its seven matches to teams that reached the section finals (Ocean View, Mater Dei, twice to Newport Harbor and twice to Santa Margarita). Two of La Habra’s losses were against Division I opponents--Esperanza and Huntington Beach--but the Highlanders return to the Division III-AA final for the first time since they won three consecutive Division 3-A titles from 1989-91.

Santa Margarita (16-3) vs. Santa Barbara San Marcos (18-1)
1 P.M. SATURDAY: LONG BEACH STATE
Santa Margarita Coach Eddie Rapp, who led the Eagles to their first section titles in girls’ and boys’ volleyball last season, has his girls’ team back in the finals. Santa Margarita defeated Westlake Village Westlake, a Division II-A finalist this season, to win the Division II-A title last season. Santa Margarita moved up to Division II-AA this season and handed San Marcos its only loss, 15-7, 15-11, 13-15, 15-8, on Oct. 3.

Mater Dei (21-1) vs. Marina (17-2)
4:30 P.M. SATURDAY: LONG BEACH STATE
This Division I-A championship match features two of the county’s most powerful hitters, Lindsay Phillips and Lauren Warner, but defense and passing probably will make the difference. Mater Dei’s only loss this season was to San Jose Archbishop Mitty, but it played without Amy DeCinces. Both schools are playing in their first volleyball section final, but Marina will need to play its best if it hopes to topple the top-ranked team in the state.

Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (19-2) vs. Newport Harbor (19-2)
7:30 P.M. SATURDAY: LONG BEACH STATE
At the Santa Barbara tournament this month, Mira Costa, led by Stanford-bound Ashley Bowles, edged Newport Harbor, 6-15, 15-9, 16-14, 4-15, 15-6. Both teams are playing well. Mira Costa battled out of the toughest region in the Division I-AA bracket and Newport Harbor is a young team that looks ready to peak. Newport Harbor defeated Laguna Beach in two five-game matches during the regular season but dispatched the Artists in three games in the semifinals.
