Grant to Reduce Impact of Airport Noise Awarded
A $10.5-million federal grant awarded Wednesday to the city of Inglewood will be used to reduce the impact of noise from Los Angeles International Airport, city officials said.
The grant will enable the city to accelerate its program of acquiring residential property in the noise-impacted Darby-Dixon neighborhood and redevelop it for compatible uses, city officials said.
Deanna Unternahrer, a coordinator in the city’s airport program division, said the city plans to buy 284 housing units in the area and covert them into commercial uses that would be less affected by airport noise.
The funding is part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, which has awarded Inglewood nearly $40 million since 1984 for noise mitigation programs.
Unternahrer said the funds will be phased in over four years.
