Panthers Bench Struggling Collins

Quarterback Kerry Collins, the Carolina Panthers’ first-ever draft choice, was benched Wednesday in favor of Steve Beuerlein after turning the ball over nine times in the past two games.

Coach Dom Capers did not set a timetable for Collins’ return. The Panthers have a bye this week.

Brett Favre says some players are out to injure him by going after his knees.

“I understand this game is a tough game, but there’s times guys go after your legs and you watch it on film and you go, ‘That’s totally uncalled for,’ ” the Green Bay quarterback said Wednesday. “I respect this game the way people play it, but when you kind of go out of the lines of the rules, it’s not right. You can end a guy’s career.”
