Laguna Beach Dumps Marina in Water Polo

Laguna Beach rallied from a four-goal deficit at the half to defeat Marina, 7-5, in a second-round game in the Villa Park water polo tournament Thursday at Canyon High.

Spencer Dornin’s goal with 3 minutes 3 seconds remaining gave the Artists a 6-5 lead and Dornin added his second goal of the game as time ran out.

Laguna Beach, ranked second in Division II and fifth in the county, trailed, 5-1, at the half before shutting out the Vikings in the second half. Marina is ranked fifth in Division II.

In other tournament games:

No. 6 Capistrano Valley 13, South Pasadena 6--Nick Booth and Dennis Connolly each scored four goals for Capistrano Valley as it advanced to the quarterfinal round.

In a first-round game, Capistrano Valley defeated Villa Park’s junior varsity, 17-5.

No. 8 Villa Park 12, Brea Olinda 4--Nick Pacelli scored six goals to lead Villa Park to the quarterfinals. In a first-round game, Kyle Baumgarner scored five goals for the Spartans in a 10-4 victory over Aliso Niguel. Villa Park is 8-5.

No. 9 Santa Margarita 10, Katella 5--Andrew Jensen scored five goals in a second-round victory. Jeremy Janton had three goals for Katella (5-4).

Katella defeated Santa Maria Righetti, 11-7, in a first round game. Janton had five goals in the game for the Knights. Jeff Pratt also had two goals for Katella.

In Century League boys’ cross-country:

Santa Ana Valley 22, Villa Park 37--Augustine Escobar of Villa Park and Santa Ana Valley’s Manuel Ojeda tied for first in 15 minutes 54 seconds on Irvine Park’s 3.1-mile course.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 18, Troy 44--Fabian Ruelas and Heriberto Sarabia of Sonora, set a course record as both runners crossed the finish line in 15:40 at Craig Park.

In the Golden West League:

No. 1 Santa Ana 15, Ocean View 50--Alfonso Leon and Jorge Pena crossed the finish line together for a time of 16:03 on the three-mile course at Central Park to lead the sweep for Santa Ana (3-0). Juan Salgado finished three seconds behind in third. Omar Mateo was fourth (16:45) and Miguel Bolanos fifth (16:47).

In the Sunset League:

No. 9 Edison 25, Los Alamitos 31--Edison’s Andy Knudsen finished first in 15:41 over three miles at El Dorado Park.

In Freeway League girls’ cross-country:

Troy 16, Sonora 47--Troy’s Lisa Dunn finished in 18:38 to set a course record at Craig Park. Troy is 1-0 league.

In the Sunset League

No. 10 Los Alamitos 20, Edison 38--Christine Ruby finished first for Los Alamitos in 19:25.

Fountain Valley 28, Huntington Beach 31--Nikki Shubin finished second for Fountain Valley in 20:44. Kristin Green of Huntington Beach finished first in 19:47 over three miles at Central Park West.

In the Freeway League girls’ tennis:

No. 9 Troy 17, Sonora 1--Seniors Karen Corby and Kathy Vestal won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3, for Troy (7-1, 1-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 15, Santa Margarita 3--Corona del Mar’s No. 2 doubles team of Ruchika Budhrija and Courtney Tenerelli swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. The Sea Kings’ top singles player Nina Vaughan easily won her sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Her sister, Nadia, also swept. Corona del Mar is 7-0.

Fountain Valley 9, Marina 9 (Fountain Valley wins on games, 76-67)--Fountain Valley’s No. 1 singles player, Jenny Hipp, dropped only two games, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the Barons.

In nonleague tennis:

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 16, St. Margaret’s 2--Carolyn Mitchell, playing her first singles sets for Capistrano Valley, swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Mitchell usually plays on the No. 1 doubles team for the Cougars (6-1).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

No. 1 Ocean View 3, Cypress 0--Outside hitter Amy Knebel had 17 kills in Ocean View’s 15-12, 15-2, 15-8 victory. Dusty Creager had nine kills for Cypress (1-2). Ocean View is 3-1.

No. 4 Huntington Beach 3, Dana Hills 0--Alissa Moss had 21 assists for Huntington Beach, which won 15-5, 15-8, 15-11. The Oilers are 6-0.

No. 5 Newport Harbor 3, No. 2 Laguna Beach 1--Laguna Beach (2-1) could not withstand the outside hitting attack of Newport Harbor (3-1). Sophomore April Ross had 30 kills for Newport Harbor in the 15-9, 14-16, 15-12, 15-9 victory.

No. 7 Marina 3, Sunny Hills 0--Chanda McLeod had nine kills, Lindsay Phillips had eight and Ashlee Phillips had 25 assists, five kills and three blocks for Marina (4-1), which won, 15-2, 15-7, 15-9.
